Types of Framework

There are three types of Framework: weighing mechanisms, theoretical observations, and general resolutional analysis. Josh Zoffer has an excellent Framework lecture video online at NFLtv.org (NFLtv.org’s video is no longer live, but it has been reposted on a blog here). He names these three types of Framework and provides an explanation of each. These three categories are by no means prescriptive; the types are broad enough to allow for creativity but I do believe they are inclusive of the Frameworks I have seen to date. A weighing mechanism tells the judge how you evaluate the round by focusing in on the impacts. Theoretical observations provide a way to imagine the results of a policy action or how to analyze a circumstantial situation. Resolutional analysis sets up a burden of proof or grounds for debate based on the wording of resolution. You can also combine the tools within the three types of Framework to fit the resolution as needed.

Before discussing the specifics types of Framework, I think it is very important to understand the goals of Framework. No matter how well written or warranted a Framework is, if it does not serve a clear purpose, a simple waste of precious debate time.
