Whipping in Closing Half: Framing and Weaponizing Your Extension
This was the Open Grand Finals of the World Universities Debating Championship in 2016 and the motion is in the video description. This debate was incredibly close, with the Opening Government narrowly beating the Closing Opposition on a 5-4 split decision. The deliberation was one of the longest in debating history, with the panel of judges taking around 5-6 hours.
- Watch the Opening Government’s case and then you can skip forward to the Opposition Member’s speech to understand the nature of their extension in the debate. After which, I would recommend you take a moment to think about how you would frame and use that extension speech to prove your team has won the debate. Compare your speech notes against what the Opposition Whip does in the debate.
